COSHH Assessment — Hot Lime / Quicklime (Calcium Oxide / CaO)

This pre-completed COSHH assessment covers quicklime (calcium oxide / CaO) — a highly reactive white powder or granular material that reacts violently with water generating intense heat (up to 300°C). Used in construction, agriculture and water treatment. Must be treated as a highly hazardous material; full PPE and immediate access to eyewash and emergency shower are essential.

What Does This COSHH Assessment Cover?

The assessment is fully completed and ready to use, covering all sections required for a complete hazardous substance risk assessment:

  • Substance identification — trade name (Quicklime / Hot Lime / Calcium Oxide), chemical name (CaO), SDS reference and physical state
  • Health effects and first aid — severe inhalation burns including risk of pulmonary oedema; life-threatening ingestion burns; severe exothermic skin burns (heat accelerates injury); permanent blindness from eye contact; specific emergency first aid for each route
  • Violent exothermic reaction hazard — quicklime reacts violently with water; dry lime must be brushed off skin before applying water; adding water to bulk quicklime causes explosive spattering; may ignite combustible materials through heat of reaction
  • Workplace exposure limits — calcium oxide TWA 2 mg/m³ over 8 hours; avoid all dust inhalation using LEV or RPE
  • CLP hazard classification — Corrosive pictogram
  • PPE requirements — full face shield (minimum goggles), FFP3 dust respirator, full coveralls, PVC or neoprene gloves covering forearms; eyewash and emergency shower immediately accessible
  • Emergency procedures — do not apply water to dry spills; contain and collect dry; store in sealed containers in dry location

Who Is This COSHH Assessment For?

This assessment is suitable for any workplace where quicklime is used, including:

  • Heritage lime slaking and hot lime plastering specialists
  • Agricultural lime spreading and soil treatment operations
  • Water and wastewater treatment facilities
  • Chemical and industrial processing using CaO
